Sequential Imagery

Here is my design for our Sequential Imagery project. I used a slight blue gradient as blue is sort of the "official" color of Autism. I originally had the lower photos as silhouettes as well, however, I decided against it as it did not "pop" nor did it properly help progress the story of the images along. I also used one of the icons of autism, the blue puzzle piece, and just gave it a slight drop shadow to help it stand out.

As for the message, I want people to realize that having autism doesn't just affect the person who has it. The entire family needs to learn new ways of helping the person with autism out and helping them learn. In addition to this, EVERYONE needs to be cognizant of the challenges that autistic people face. At the very least, people need to know what autism actually is, what it is not, and also understand that there are MANY different types of autism.

While relating a lot of my projects in this course to autism, as it gave me something I know a lot about and something I have a passion about, it made me realize that this is a GREAT way for me to help get the word out about Autism. I plan to keep using the skills I have learned and making more artwork that helps spread the word.

Enhancement

Here is my enhancement to my book cover. I made the title larger and more prominent by adding a slight drop shadow and an orange glow to get it to "pop" over the lighter background. I decided to do a cloud-like texture to symbolize the "storminess" of the character's actions in the book. The lower bar had some shadow added to it to to lift it off the page. The gear icon I made a little softer by desaturating it a little bit as I felt the original was a little too colorful.

Here is the original for reference:

Redesigned Book Cover

I chose one of my favorite books, "A Clockwork Orange". There have been so many editions of this book, I sort of played off of a few of them. The book contains a lot of symbolism, so I chose the to emphasize the gear and the eyeball that a lot of the original covers used to stand for "A Clockwork Orange", that is a human who has been almost changed to barely be human anymore.

The story was supposed to take place in the very near future, so I decided to use the cover to show that modern minimalism that the book conjoured up well (as did the movie). I used the Texture filter to add a slight look of canvas to the cover, and used VERY subtle gradients so that the colors do not just sit there. I also chose a slightly blocky font as this was common in a lot of the original covers.

Create A Poster

I decided to do my poster about Autism awareness. As I've said before, it is a cause close to my heart, so I feel that it's what I am best prepared to work with.
I decided to keep it real simple and simply talk about the diagnosis rate. As of 2011, one in a hundred children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. We NEED to find out what is causing this inflated rates. We know part of it is that there is much more awareness and that means more children will be diagnosed. However, that can't possibly account for the massive rise alone.

Welcome

Welcome to my blog for our Digital Art and Design class. I haven't used Blogger in years - I've been a self-hosted WordPress guy for years, but I like Blogger in that it is simple to get up and running. Everyone can visit my personal blog, blackleafmedia, to see some of the other stuff I am working on.
